RECAP: 2026 UAW Family Scholarship Program

“I’ve had a great experience. It was way more than I expected. I’ve learned so much history about our union. Understanding our history up until now – how we try to progress and get better. It’s really just been a beautiful experience. If you haven’t been, it’s time to stop wasting time. You’re paying your dues, you should be out here doing your part!”

ONAWAY, MI – During the 2026 UAW Family Scholarship Program, families from across our union came together for a week of learning, fellowship, adventure, and fun at the beautiful Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center at Black Lake in northern Michigan.

From participating in hands-on simulations, to creating unique buttons and posters, to assembling murals to honor the strength in our individual differences, everyone discovered how to use their own voice to stand up for justice. Thoughtful discussions created friendships between individuals from different regions and job sectors.

One of the most memorable activities immersed elementary, middle, and high school students in realistic workplace simulations. Assembling widgets seemed fine until the “boss” kept changing the rules and handing out arbitrary punishments like taking away their breaks. What could they do? He was the boss, after all.

Well, this group of smart young people did not stand for it! They learned about the power of solidarity and their right to form a union. They organized and went on strike, marching with posters and chants demanding fair treatment: “We have the right to bathroom privileges!”

The showdown between these young “workers” and their “boss” felt very real. Their collective action led to contract negotiations, a vote, and a fair outcome, with pizza and bowling privileges restored. Everybody deserves bathroom breaks, honest wages, and dignity on the job! Plus, it felt good to work together to win.

While each group approached the same concepts from a different point of view based on age level, the lessons will stay with all of them as they grow into the next generation of workers and leaders. Solidarity forever!

Those energetic learning activities were just the start of an action-packed week filled with fellowship and solidarity. Field day brought out a competitive spirit and a lot of laughter for many, while others chose swimming at the pool or watching a beautiful Michigan sunset. The week also featured family karaoke, glow bowling, kids’ putting lessons, hiking nature trails, spotting wildlife, and a free afternoon in Mackinaw City.

This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will be remembered forever.  It was a week of new perspectives, new friends, and the unmistakable feeling of belonging in a union. Our members and their families left with a fresh understanding of how our union empowers us to change our workplaces and communities for ourselves and future generations.
