We are excited to share our first Higher Education Department Newsletter, which is a summary of 2025. We close out this year with a number of big wins and fights back, in a year of unprecedented attacks from an increasingly authoritarian presidency. The highlights below are the results of the hard work of members and elected leaders across the UAW.
May 1st is May Day, or International Workers Day. This May Day, UAW members across Region 9A are gathering with other workers to show our strength and solidarity, and gear up for May Day 2028 (read more from UAW President Shawn Fain about our plans for May Day 2028 here).

By cutting funds to lifesaving research and medical care, the Trump administration is abandoning families who are suffering and costing taxpayers billions of dollars.These cuts are dangerous to our health, and dangerous to our economy.
On Tuesday, April 8th, 2025 workers across the country are standing up and demanding NO cuts to education and life-saving research.
UAW workers in NY lobby for unemployment reforms that would allow adjunct faculty and other contingent workers in higher education to collect unemployment during semester breaks.
Taking collective action to stand up for our rights is fundamental to who we are as a union. As we have done throughout our union’s history, we fight for a more just and sustainable future for all with the knowledge that we are stronger together. Through strengthening our organizing structures, forging coalitions with other unions and progressive organizations, and building worker power across the broader labor movement, we defeated previous attempts to enact racist & xenophobic travel bans, tax graduate workers’ tuition stipends, curtail graduate workers’ rights to form unions, and more. And we will win again.

On Wednesday, hundreds of academic workers and UAW members rallied in Boston and New York City as part of a nationwide day of action to defend against the Trump administration’s attacks on public research funding.
Yesterday, members of @uaw872, @cgpu_uaw, and @uaw_4811 joined with a coalition of progressive orgs to demand that Childrens’ Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) resume life-saving care for trans youth.
