Purpose of the Local Union Communication Committee

UAW-LUCA exists to strengthen labor communications by connecting, supporting, and educating local union communicators across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. We provide opportunities to build skills through monthly webinars, newsletters, mentoring, and peer-to-peer learning. We also connect locals with communications resources and tools, including SolidWeb, Action Network, and Mobile Commons, to help them better inform and engage their members.

Through conferences, digital resources, our YouTube channel, Facebook community, and the annual Excellence in Communications Contest, LUCA gives communicators opportunities to learn from each other, share ideas, and recognize the work being done in local unions.

Our purpose is simple: to help labor communicators find their voice, strengthen their skills, and make their local communications more effective.

History

Originally founded in 1978 as UAW Local Union Press Association (UAW-LUPA), UAW-LUPA helped UAW local unions produce top-quality, effective print publications. In 2013 UAW-LUPA was renamed UAW Local Union Communication Association (UAW-LUCA) to reflect the digital age. In 2026, during the 39th Constitutional Convention in Detroit, delegates voted to officially make LUCA a standing committee, enshrined in the UAW Constitution.
