Allentown, PA
 – In a new video, members of UAW Local 677, who build Mack Trucks in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley, speak out against broken trade deals that are threatening thousands of good blue-collar jobs. The video highlights the deep frustration and disappointment felt by workers who have dedicated their careers to producing quality trucks in the Lehigh Valley, while the company pursues plans to offshore jobs to a new low-wage, high-exploitation facility in Mexico.

“We’re collateral damage, basically, to someone’s stroke of a pen. And it’s scary to think that that happens in this world today. It really does make you reevaluate what you mean to your employer. Or what you don’t mean to your employer,” says Nicole DeFuso, a skilled trades apprentice at Mack.

In 2023, Mack Truck workers went on strike to win a new agreement at the iconic truck maker. During those negotiations, the company falsely represented plans to further invest in Pennsylvania. Instead, the company has broken ground to build a facility in Monterrey, Mexico, where workers are likely to make less than $4 an hour.

The UAW has filed Unfair Labor Practice charges at the National Labor Relations Board over the company’s bad faith bargaining. Mack’s decision to build a plant in Mexico—rather than keeping production in the United States—is the direct result of disastrous trade policies such as NAFTA and its successor, the USMCA.

These policies, backed by both major political parties, have paved the way for corporations to chase lower wages and weaker labor protections, leaving American workers behind. The move threatens good-paying union jobs, undermines the region’s economic stability, and represents what workers have called “a slap in the face” after years of dedication and commitment.

“The products are being sold for the same amount if not more. But that’s all going into the pockets of the corporations,” says Michael Shupp, a Local 677 member at Mack.

The newly released video provides firsthand accounts from UAW Local 677 members, who express their concerns about job security, economic uncertainty, and the erosion of domestic manufacturing. It calls out the bipartisan failure to protect American workers from these trade policies, which have fueled a race to the bottom in wages and working conditions, allowing corporations like Mack to exploit cheaper labor abroad at the expense of U.S. jobs.

The UAW has been vocal in demanding the immediate renegotiation of the USMCA, recognizing that for 40 years, so-called “free trade” has devastated the working class. Corporations have driven a relentless race to the bottom, killing good blue-collar jobs in America while exploiting workers in other countries with poverty wages. The union has also encouraged the use of tariffs as a tool in the fight to undo the injustice of anti-worker trade deals.

“I remember when I was a kid, my dad would talk about NAFTA. Now you read up on this stuff and you see how much destruction that certain things can have,” says DeFuso.

“We need to have laws that are going to support us and not have to be worried about potentially losing our jobs,” says Dan Hand, a Committeeperson with Local 677.

The union has expressed that if corporate America chooses to jack up prices on the working class or throw their own workers under the bus just to avoid paying their fair share, they should pay a penalty. The working class took the full hit when NAFTA hollowed out manufacturing towns like those in the Lehigh Valley, and they shouldn’t bear the brunt of undoing it, too.

The UAW is actively engaged in negotiations with the Trump Administration regarding its plans to end the free trade disaster. The union is looking to negotiate the terms of the upcoming auto tariffs in April in a way that benefits the working class. The union is demanding serious action to incentivize companies to change their behavior, reinvest in America, and stop cheating the American worker, the American consumer, and the American taxpayer.

The policies that reflect trade have not been on the worker side for many years.

And here we are.

Having them breaking ground in Monterrey, Mexico, for a Mack facility.

Collateral damage basically to someone’s stroke of a pen. And it’s scary to think that that happens in this world today.

When the company is looking at where they can go, they’re going to find the cheapest place possible. And in 1994, GM was moving to Mexico because they could pay their employees $0.48 an hour. Mack is currently moving to Mexico because they can pay their employees $3 to $4 an hour.

Really does make you reevaluate.

Wait, what you mean to your employer, or what you don’t mean to your employer?

Now, with this information, as far as with the Mexico plant, this is the first time that myself, in over 26 years, and I’m actually concerned about the longevity of the plant.

I remember when I was a kid, my dad would talk about NAFTA, and he was so mad about it. And I was just like, I don’t know what that is.

But now you read up on this stuff and you see how much destruction that certain things can have.

We need to have laws that are going to support us and not have to be worried about potentially losing our jobs.

The products are being sold for the same amount, if not more. But that’s all going into the pockets of the corporations.

Like, this is our life. This is our livelihood.

There’s a lot of question marks as far as where we’re going to be in the future.

You know, the work is important to us.

Maybe they had this in the back of their mind the whole time, that they would just move this plant and save the money on wages, going to a foreign country where they’re going to pay them pennies on the dollar to do the same labor that we do.

They’re building a bigger divide between the haves and have-nots.

The income down in Mexico is very low compared to what it is here.

They need to support their families as well.

You want to feel like your livelihood matters.

It will definitely affect work here in the Lehigh Valley.

I have 25 years in the place. You know, I planned on retiring from there.

Who wants to see us go?

Nobody, really.

When it comes to manufacturing, those are good jobs that we need to fight for.

The rally kicks off a day of union-led door-to-door canvassing to elect UAW champions in the Allentown, PA area.

ALLENTOWN, PA  On Sunday, UAW President Shawn Fain and U.S. Rep. Susan Wild (CD-7) will join UAW members, leaders, and allies at the “Rally with the Working Class” to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz and Democrats up and down the ballot. Sunday’s rally is a joint event hosted by UAW Regions 9 and 9A.

“Kamala Harris is the candidate of the working class,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “She stood with us on the picket line while Donald Trump did nothing. She and President Biden bet on the American worker and brought manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. Donald Trump doubled down on NAFTA and sent our jobs to Mexico. He is a con man and a scab. He will side with the billionaires and sell out to the working class. Kamala Harris stands with us and that’s why UAW members are standing up, speaking up and showing up to elect her president.”

In August, the UAW launched its most ambitious political program in decades. The Union’s program includes mobilizing UAW members online, at worksites, and in the field with a door-to-door program to reach members, retirees, and their families around a pro-worker, anti-Corporate Greed agenda. The Union’s one million active and retired members form a core base of support for the Harris-Walz campaign and will provide a major piece of the campaign’s margin of victory in key races in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

The UAW’s plan to win stems from the vision that launched 2023’s Stand Up strike and movement. By putting out the facts, uniting the working class, and letting members lead the way, the UAW’s “Stand Up, Speak Up, Show Up” campaign will mobilize a mass campaign to defeat the billionaire class at the ballot box.

At UAWStandUp2024.org, UAW members will find resources, videos, flyers, and links to factual information around the candidates’ records, and why the UAW is ready to stand up, speak up, and show up in November.

The Nazareth BMW RDC is united more than ever after another successful rally today, following more mandatory overtime! We will not be divided!

BMW must be afraid of the bargaining committee because today they provided their 2nd “last, best, and final” offer to the entire membership.

Y’ALL BY NOW MAY HAVE GOTTEN THE COMPANY’S PROPAGANDA DISTRIBUTED ON THE SHOP FLOOR (remember on day one they promised they would do this kind of bullshit?).  WELL, THEY DID IT.

READ IT CAREFULLY.

THANKS FOR THE UNIFORM ALLOWANCE – BUT WE WANT TO END TIERS.

Apparently, they do not understand that we are not interested in pennies. Our brothers and sisters collectively showed up to negotiations to tell the company NO the first time!

The company’s second “last, best, and final” offer still fails to return wages & bonuses that were greedily taken from the workers! Their discretionary update to the “bonus” program cut our pay in 2021, and their offers still fail to correct that. With billions in profit, how greedy can the company be? This is unacceptable.

Our committee will continue to negotiate, for a contract that addresses what the company’s proposal failed to:

● Elimination of Tiers
● Record Wage Increases
● Affordable Healthcare
● Non-discretionary bonuses
● Safe & Healthy working conditions

Your bargaining committee will provide strike preparedness information tomorrow. We will be ready, if necessary, to stand up for a fair contract.

● Bonos no discrecionales

Your brothers and sisters joined the bargaining committee today to tell the company NO to their “last, best, and final” offer. We have shown the company we are united, and will not be bullied into a weak contract. The company said they can afford a record contract, and we will not accept anything less. After years of being taken advantage of, the workers are here to stand up against corporate greed.

After the workers showed up, the company verbally agreed to changes including $600 annually for a new uniform policy.

We have provided the company with another proposal that includes your demands such as

● NO TIERS

● RECORD WAGE INCREASES

● IMPROVED RETIREMENT BENEFITS

● AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE

● HEALTH AND SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS

● COLA

● AND NO CONCESSIONS

Your bargaining committee is working on your strike schedules and signs, and we are prepared if necessary. Schedules outlining time & responsibilities will be distributed on Friday if no agreement is reached, but we will continue to bargain in good faith.

Tomorrow, June 27th we rally on the hill at 4:30 pm. Wear your red shirt to show we are united in solidarity!

Contract expires June 30th. TICK TOCK

TIC TAC

Your bargaining committee waited all day for the company to meet for only 30 minutes.

The company gave their “Last, Best, Complete, and Final Offer” with what the company claims is a significant raise as low as $1.51. With over 50 billion in profits since the last contract, they should be ashamed. The company has billions for shareholder distributions but refuses to return their workers to wages these same jobs paid over a decade ago. With multiple days until contract expiration, to present a last, best, and final this early is insulting.

The membership is here to stand up against corporate greed for better working conditions, and better lives for our family, if necessary.

No Tiers – equal pay for equal work

Real profit sharing and non-discretionary bonuses

Affordable Healthcare

Improved working conditions, such as adequate restroom accessibility.

Resolutions to our health and safety concerns

Improved Family / Life balance regarding overtime

We will rally this Thursday, June 27th at 4:30pm on the hill. Please wear a red shirt to show we are united in solidarity.

Contract expires on June 30th. TICK TOCK

Our bargaining committee met with the company today, presenting large bundles of both economic and non-economic proposals.

We continue to demand closing the wage gap the company created years ago. Equal pay for equal work is a MUST for the membership and must be addressed in this contract. Your committee estimates wage concessions for new hires have cost workers well over $15,000,000 in the last decade, while the company has profited BILLIONS. We ask for only a fraction of that back to return good-paying union jobs back to our community. Even the company’s lawyer admitted they could afford it.

We continue to demand the following because the company can afford to do so with over 50 BILLION in profits since 2021.

● Elimination of Tiers

● Record Wage increases for a livable wage

● Profit Sharing

● Freeze on Healthcare costs

● Better working conditions

The member-driven rally today was a major success, following not only over time but also during a record heat wave. We are united in solidarity more than ever, with tremendous support from the UAW.

Your bargaining committee will continue to work hard until a record contract is won.

The contract expires on June 30th, 2024. TICK TOCK

Your bargaining committee met with the company today to continue negotiating for the member’s demands. The company continues to waste our time offering pennies on the dollar, and still failing to address our top issues. Their proposals continue to include no path to the top rate. When the committee asked why the company failed to address our concerns, they responded without reason. After contradicting themselves about affording to do so, the lawyer responded they could afford it, but wouldn’t. Their proposals continue to exclude the following: No real profit sharing. No freeze on healthcare costs. No COLA. No bathroom equality for women.

We’ll return to the table tomorrow.

We will rally tomorrow, June 20th at 4:30 pm on the hill to continue showing the company we are united in winning a record contract.

Your bargaining committee met today and worked hard on proposals to address your concerns, such as the elimination of tiers, improved work/life balance regarding overtime, and profit sharing. The company did not have the audacity to even show up. They were available only in email, and their proposals were not worth the paper required to print them (pay increases of $1.29 for a “top rate” of $22.95). Their proposals still fail to address our demands.

We continue to remind the company their proposal MUST include the following

● NO TIERS – Equal pay for equal work

● PROFIT SHARING

● IMPROVED RETIREMENT BENEFITS

● AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE

● COLA

● DIGNITY & RESPECT

Our contract expires on June 30th, and there will be no extensions.

Dear brothers and sisters,

Your bargaining committee met with the company today to further discuss the member’s demands. The company heard stories from our members of our economic struggles resulting from their greed. While we struggle to afford a cup of coffee for the energy to work overtime, BMW executives are working in Las Vegas attending private parties with celebrities. We continue to make progress on non-economic issues, but the company has yet to make a realistic economic proposal that addresses the END of Wage Tiers. We reminded the company that our members will not accept anything that does not include:

ELIMINATION OF TIERS

RECORD PAY INCREASES

PROFIT SHARING

AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE

COLA

We continue to see tremendous support from the UAW, Local 677, Region 9, and your international president Shawn Fain’s office.

We continue to remind the company they’ve made 50 billion over the last 3 years, and shareholders saw 7.2 billion in distributions.

Since our previous contract in 2021, inflation has gone up 14.5%. UAW General wage increase (GWI) went up 3%, but our buying power has reduced by 11.5%.

We continue the fight to reverse years of concessions and return wages to 2009 levels.

Today we had a wonderful rally, with a lot of support from you the membership, the community, and politicians such as State Senator Bob Casey’s Aide, and Candidate Stefanie Rafes for Pennsylvania House of Representatives, District 187.

We will return to the bargaining table next week on June 18th, 19th, and 20th.

Actualización de negociación 13/06/2024

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Dear brothers and sisters,

Your bargaining committee met with the company today and brought some of our family in to speak at the table. Our members from the RDC told personal stories to the company about not being able to afford daycare, not affording home repairs, and not spending time with family. The company was informed of poor working conditions and processes that still exist today, which is unacceptable. We made some minor movements on non-economic issues

We ended the day by reminding the company we demand the following:

END OF TIERS

RECORD PAY INCREASES

REDUCED HEALTHCARE COSTS

PROFIT SHARING

COLA

The company continues to laugh as we demand they return the 47% wage reduction they took from us years ago.

Please join us tomorrow, June 13th on the hill to show the company our demands are not a joke. We are UNITED and SERIOUS.
