BMW RDC Bargaining Updates

BARGAINING UPDATE ON UAW LOCAL 677 BMW RDC NEGOTIATIONS MAY 10, 2024

UAW-Wheel-Logo

UAW BMW Family,

‘This is going to be a different kind of bargaining.”

Your Bargaining Committee met today with the Company’s representatives for the first day of bargaining with the goal of securing an historic contract making up for years of concessions and all those years of little to no pay increases and constant give backs.

After introductions (including your Bargaining Committee introducing not just the Committee members but also the Union’s counsel and two representatives from the UAW International who will be assisting the Union throughout bargaining), Bargaining Committee Chair Zach Haas declared that “this is going to be a different kind of bargaining” and shared with the Company some baseline ground rules, including:

  • the Contract expires on June 30, 2024 – the Union will not agree to any extensions.
  • there will be NO CONCESSIONS – for as long as people can remember the Company has demanded and taken from the workers, this bargaining will be different, Brother Haas explained that theCommittee will not bring back a contract with any concessions
  • this will be OPEN BARGAINING – the Union’s bargaining committee will not agree to any confidentiality or secret deals, and instead, the Union is committed to open and transparent reports to the bargaining unit members (such as these shop updates).

In response, April Vigilante — who appears to be the Company’s lead negotiator, appeared excited to announce that the Company will be breaking from the past practice of releasing the bargaining committee from work with pay for the time needed to complete the contract, and instead the Company was setting a strict limit of 24 hours to complete bargaining.

24 hours?

Maybe that would have worked in the past concessionary years of bargaining. Not this year.

When challenged by the Committee as to why the Company would place these kinds of limits, April appeared to relent and said that the Company would be “open to those discussions.” We will see where this lands and whether the Company will comply with its past practice.

(The Committee also questioned why the Company picked a location for bargaining that is an hour travel time from the shop. The only response from the Company was an invitation for the Union to propose a different location. We will of course take the Company up on that invitation.)

April also announced that, as compared to the Union, the Company would not be sharing any information about what is happening at the bargaining table with the bargaining unit. We will see how long they keep that promise.

After a caucus, your Bargaining Committee met with the Company and agreed to return to the bargaining table on the following dates: May 14,

May 15, May 21 and May 22.
