UAW Training Resources
The UAW Health and Safety Department provides Local Unions and their respective companies with:
- Assistance in negotiating health and safety programs,
- Workplace safety inspections,
- Reviewing injury/illness information and chemical exposure data,
- Conducting research,
- Participation in governmental and consensus standard setting,
- Developing joint health and safety training programs, and
- Delivering health and safety training.
The UAW is able to deliver high quality health and safety training free of charge (no instructor or material fees) at the worksite, on work time. This is accomplished with support from grants by the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth. Training can also be delivered at union halls, regional offices or other venues in the field.
UAW training at the worksite is conducted by a full time staff and experienced peer safety trainers. These peer trainers are UAW members designated as Local Union Discussion Leaders trained in adult learning techniques.

OSHA TRAINING INSTITUTE EDUCATION CENTER
The UAW is a partner in providing training through the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) UAW members and Department staff regularly instruct at the campuses in Livonia and Ypsilanti, MI. These programs can also be delivered at any UAW represented facility.
“As part of the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) the United Auto workers provides instruction through the Great Lakes OSHA Education Center. The Center provides training at a number of locations in the mid-west.”
Each of the courses offered can also be delivered as a targeted training anywhere in the US. We can deliver OSHA certificate training. Requests for these targeted trainings should be made through the UAW Regional Director.

Public Sector Safety & Health Fundamentals Certificate Program for General Industry
Specialist in Occupational Safety and Health Standard
Students who complete the OSHA regulation course and a series of three other courses qualify for a Specialist in Health and Safety Certificate:
- OSHA 511 OS&H Standards-General Industry
- OSHA 501 Trainer Course for General Industry
- OSHA 521 Guide to Industrial Hygiene
- OSHA 7500 Introduction to Safety and Health Management
- OSHA 7505 Introduction to Accident Investigation
- Electives can be any of the OTI numbered courses with the exception of the OSHA 500, 502, 503, 510, 511, and 7845.

511 OSH Standards (“What does the Reg Say”)
Date: August 8-11, 2017
This course is taught by UAW Health and Safety Instructors and covers OSHA Standards, policies, and procedures in general industry. Topics include scope and application of the OSHA General Industry Standards, general industry. Upon course completion students will have the ability to define general industry terms found in the OSHA General Industry Standards, identify hazards which occur in their worksite, determine solutions to problems and strengthen and enhance their safety and health program.

521 OSHA Guide to Industrial Hygiene (Smell This… Taste That)
Date: August 15-18, 2017
Taught by UAW health and Safety Instructors this course covers techniques an Industrial Hygienist uses to evaluate workplace hazards such as air contaminates, chemical hazards the participants will learn to determine appropriate health standards and the use of sampling equipment. Upon course completion students will have the ability to recognize basic industrial hygiene principles and practices, identify characteristics of common air contaminants, locate PELs, perform basic industrial hygiene calculations, and determine methods for hazard control and abatement.

7845 Recordkeeping
Date: July 28, 2017
This course covers OSHA requirements for maintaining and posting of occupational injuries and illnesses records, and how to report specific cases to OSHA. Upon course completion students will have to use OSHA recordkeeping requirements to identify posting and reporting and to complete OSHA Form 300 Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, OSHA Form 300A Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses, and OSHA Form 301 Injury and Illness Incident Report.
