UAW President Shawn Fain on NYC Mayor’s Race: “We don’t need another hack politician like Cuomo”

NEW YORK—Today, ahead of Tuesday’s primary election for New York City mayor, the UAW released a new video narrated by President Shawn Fain in an enthusiastic endorsement of Zohran Mamdani. The video, which is being targeted to the 40,000 UAW members and their households that live in New York City, directly calls out Andrew Cuomo as “another hack politician.”

“We don’t need another hack politician like Cuomo—someone who smiles for the cameras and then sells us out behind closed doors,” narrates UAW President Shawn Fain. “What we need is a national movement that unites the working class to take on the oligarchs and rebuild our democracy.

“And that is exactly the kind of movement that Zohran Mamdani is leading.”

In December 2024, UAW Region 9A became the first labor union to endorse Zohran Mamdani for mayor, recognizing that his campaign, focused on the cost-of-living crisis, would resonate with New Yorkers. Moreover, Mamdani’s commitment to build affordable housing, freeze the rent, make buses fast and free, and institute universal childcare echoed the UAW’s demands to make life more affordable for working-class New Yorkers, the majority of whom are renters and commuters.

That’s why on May 30, UAW Region 9A called on its New York City UAW households to rank Mamdani first on the ballot.

“Zohran isn’t owned by Wall Street,” says Fain in the video’s voiceover. “He’s a fighter for free transit, housing for all, universal childcare, and a $30 an hour minimum wage. He believes in democracy—not just in city elections, but on the job, in our apartment buildings, and in our neighborhoods.”

In New York City, the UAW takes on some of the richest employers in the country.  

Employers like Mercedes Benz, Columbia University, NYU, and Sony. 

So we know a thing or two about how bosses act. 

They view the workplace like a dictatorship.  

The corporate class expects to be treated like kings.  

They mock our rights.  

They want us silent. Obedient. Disposable. 

They expect workers to sit down and shut up. 

That’s not just how they run their workplaces. It’s how they want to run our country. 

That’s exactly how Andrew Cuomo ran New York when he was Governor. 

He bullied and harassed workers. 

He protected billionaires. 

He cut Medicaid in the middle of a pandemic. 

And when striking UAW members needed his support on the picket line, he was nowhere to be found. 

Those days are over. 

Because across New York City and all over our country, the working class is rising up.

We aren’t being obedient. We’re being fearless. 

We are demanding higher wages. 

Healthcare for all. 

A secure retirement. 

A home we can afford.

UAW Hails Decision of Federal Judge to Restore Terminated NIH Grants

Detroit, MI – Leaders of the UAW reacted today to Judge William Young’s ruling to reverse the cancellation of hundreds of National Institutes of Health grants the agency had recently cut based on claims that they support certain topics including “gender ideology” or “diversity, equity and inclusion”. The UAW, which was a plaintiff in one case, represents more than 120,000 academic workers at higher education institutions across the country, many of whose work and careers were directly impacted by the terminated grants.

“These politically motivated attacks jeopardized medical and scientific progress and threatened the jobs of researchers studying climate change, renewable energy, cancer, viral pandemics, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s,” said Brandon Mancilla, Director of UAW Region 9A, which includes New York, Massachusetts and the Northeast. “This decision is poised to restore hundreds of millions of dollars in previously allocated research funding, reanimating labs and workers focused on some of the most pressing health questions we face. We are grateful that this work can now get back on track.”

“Judge Young was right to call these cuts exactly what they are: illegal and discriminatory,” said Mike Miller, Director of UAW Region 6, which covers California, Washington and much of the western U.S. “The research UAW workers perform is essential to the development of technologies and treatments to enhance public health – and we are hopeful that that work is now able to proceed.”

“Not only did these attempted cuts impede lifesaving care for millions of Americans, but delays in treatment are projected to cost the public billions of dollars,” said Tim Smith, Director of UAW Region 8, which includes the National Institutes of Health and much of the mid-Atlantic seaboard. “We thank Judge Young for his decision, and are hopeful that we can now move forward with the research and innovation so many Americans depend on.”

UAW Releases New Video on Andrew Cuomo’s Failures for Working-Class New Yorkers

NEW YORK—Today, the UAW released a new video highlighting the failures of Andrew Cuomo as Governor of New York for working-class people and communities across the state. On Friday, UAW Region 9A endorsed Zohran Mamdani #1 for mayor along with a full ballot suggestion including explicit instructions to not rank Andrew Cuomo. UAW was the first union to endorse Mamdani and has been explicit in Cuomo’s failures for working people.

“In the UAW, our endorsements are earned,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “We support politicians who stand with us, and who have the courage to fight for the working class.

“Zohran Mamdani has stood shoulder to shoulder with us in our fight against some of the toughest bosses in New York City. He’s been to countless UAW picket lines. He’s fought for better wages, for our livelihoods, and for a livable city for UAW members.

“We need new elected leaders who are not afraid to pick a side—politicians who will put workers over corporate donors every single time. That’s why our union is proud to support Zohran Mamdani and a ranked slate of pro-worker champions for mayor.”

In 2019, UAW was the driving force behind the passage of a bill providing unemployment benefits for striking workers in the New York State legislature. Later that year, while waiting for then-Governor Cuomo to sign the bill into law, UAW members at General Motors went on a six-week strike. Instead of being able to access the benefits the legislature granted, UAW members were left in the lurch by Cuomo, who not only refused to sign the bill during the strike to provide immediate relief for the members, but also refused to visit the picket line in solidarity.

“We can’t trust politicians who got us into the current mess to lead us out,” said UAW Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla. “Especially when they refused to support striking workers when they needed help the most.

“20,000 UAW members in New York City know that they can stand up for a future in New York and reject the corruption and cronyism of Andrew Cuomo. We can fight for a future that includes a rent freeze, fast and free busses, and universal childcare. We have an alternative for working people on June 24 by ranking Zohran Mamdani #1 and our ranked choice slate.”

In 2023, when UAW members engaged in the historic Stand Up Strike, with the support of nearly every politician and 80% of Americans, Cuomo again was nowhere to be seen. Unlike the UAW’s endorsed slate of candidates for New York City Mayor, who have all shown up to countless picket lines in support of workers over the last decade, Andrew Cuomo has shown up to fewer picket lines than JD Vance.

I’m sure other speakers will talk about the 15,000 seniors that died in New York State nursing homes due to Covid and the serious missteps of the Cuomo administration. I’m not here to talk about that.

I’m sure other speakers will discuss the multiple sexual harassment charges brought against former governor Cuomo, but that’s not what I’m here to talk about, either.

I’m here to tell you that when the United Auto Workers needed Governor Cuomo’s help, he turned his back on us.

UAW Region 9A Director Brandon Mancilla:

Our members want a better, safer, and more affordable city. Someone who passes up the opportunity to support workers in a time of crisis, that person is unfit to be mayor of working class New Yorkers.

UAW Region 9 CAP Director (Tonawanda) Wence Valentin III:

Our membership across the country went out on strike in September of 2019 against GM. UAW Region 9 and 9A worked hard, lobbied the state legislature to get a bill passed that would ensure that unemployment would come after one week.

Cuomo, as governor, had the chance to sign that bill into law. Not only did he not sign that bill into law, he never stepped foot on any of our strike lines. Let me repeat that. He never stepped foot on any of our strike lines. Cuomo was absent and ignored every one of our calls. This is a man who wants you all to believe he supports labor.

Zohran Mamdani:

We’re talking about a man who created tier six, which took more than $100,000 out of the pockets of working class public sector workers. A man who I just saw for the first time in my life just last week, describing tier six as ancient history.

The only thing that’s ancient history is Andrew Cuomo.

Brad Lander:

Enough with the corruption. Enough with the chaos. Enough with the yielding to corporate bosses. Let’s elect a mayor who works for working New Yorkers.

Dan Maloney:

When we needed Andrew Cuomo, Cuomo showed cowardice. So New Yorkers… Don’t get fooled again.

UAW Releases New Political Video on Corporate Price Gouging

Today, the UAW released a new political video highlighting the corporate greed and price gouging behind the surging cost of basic needs. As part of the Stand Up movement, the union is activating tens of thousands of its members in Michigan and other key battleground states to turn out the vote for endorsed candidates in 2024 including the Harris-Walz presidential ticket.

 “Corporate profits are up because greedy corporations are price gouging the hell out of the working class,” narrates UAW President Shawn Fain. “You’re paying more for a gallon of milk so a CEO can buy another yacht.”   


The video breaks down facts about inflation and corporate price gouging, including how:   

  •  53% of inflation was driven by corporate profits alone  
  • New car prices went up 30% while workers’ wages remained stagnant  
  • Price of gas went up $1 per gallon since 2020 while Exxon raked in over $36 billion in profits in 2023  
  • General Mills profits went up 16.5% while they brag to investors about getting smart about  how we look at pricing 
  • Delta announced a 30% increase in airfare while their CEO gets a 250% raise

Walter Reuther once said that there is a direct relationship between the ballot box and the bread box and that couldn’t be any truer now. 

 We have a cost-of-living crisis in this country, from the gas pump to the grocery store, from your car to your rent to your medical bills, costs are going higher and higher.

If you listen to the corporate media and the pundits, you’ll hear a million explanations. They’ll say wages are too high. We know that’s B.S. They’ll say government policy causes inflation. 

So why are prices sky high? Because corporations are jacking up prices. And why do they do it? Corporate greed. 

Wherever there’s a crisis or emergency, working class people are always looking for a way to help and support one another, while the billionaire class is looking for a way to extract more wealth. 

When working class America was hit by the economic disruption of the pandemic, corporate America started seeing dollar signs. One study showed that 53% of the inflation was driven by corporate profits alone. 

What does that look like in practice? It looks like the price of a new car going up by 30% while wages remained stagnant. It looks like the price of gas rising more than a dollar a gallon since 2020. 

So, while we’re feeling the pain at the pump, Exxon raked in more than $36 billion in profits last year. It looks like General Mills profits going up 16.5%, while they brag to investors about getting smart about how we look at pricing. That’s not smart. That’s price gouging. It looks like Delta announcing a 30% increase in airfare, while their CEO gets a 250% raise. 

So, when a billionaire tells you that inflation is due to Joe Biden or government spending or regulations or because wages are too high, they’re full of it. That billionaire is pocketing those price increases and laughing all the way to the bank. 

Corporate profits are up because greedy corporations are price gouging the hell out of the working class. You’re paying more for a gallon of milk so a CEO can buy another yacht.

If we’re going to fix the cost-of-living crisis, if we’re going to give working class Americans a shot at a decent life, we’re going to have to take on Wall Street and corporate America head on. That means electing candidates that are champions for the people who have stood shoulder to shoulder with striking workers fighting for a better life. That’s candidates like Kamala Harris. 

It also means defeating candidates who serve the billionaire class, like their lapdog, Donald Trump, who takes $45 million a month in campaign contributions from his puppet master, Elon Musk. 

It also means that on November 5th, our union is ready to keep fighting for the working class and an economy that benefits all of us, no matter who is in office.

Department of Energy Awards $2 Million to UAW-CMGE to Build High Road Training Pathways for America’s Climate Workforce

As part of the Biden-Harris administration’s continued commitment to its Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded UAW Region 6 and the UAW Center for Manufacturing a Green Economy (UAW-CMGE) $2 million to further develop the High Road Battery Training Program in partnership with the Sparkz corporation.

The UAW-CMGE is one of 21 new projects recently selected by the DOE to receive a total of $24 million in funding to expand clean energy and support sustainable manufacturing in the U.S.

The UAW-CMGE was created in 2023 to lead the union’s recruitment and training for careers in climate manufacturing, empowering a well-trained, mission-driven green workforce to meet the growing needs of manufacturing operations created by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).

“The UAW-CMGE is developing a groundbreaking training model for rapidly growing climate industries, starting with the critically important domestic battery industry,” Priyanka Mohanty, Executive Director of the UAW-CMGE, said about the $2 million investment. “Our model, which focuses on equitable recruitment, technical battery knowledge, and the build-out of innovative new green apprenticeship programs, represents the high-road pathway central to the climate transition. This model will empower and protect workers on the shop floor, ensure that their voices are amplified, and build a just transition towards new, diverse, climate industries. The DOE’s 2 million dollar investment in the UAW and our center highlights the importance of high-road training programs to decarbonization, and we look forward to showing that an investment in workers is an investment in the American climate economy.”

“The UAW has shown the central role of an empowered manufacturing workforce in American decarbonization,” said Mike Miller, Chairperson, UAW-CMGE and UAW Region 6 Director. “The 2023 UAW’s contract negotiations with the Big 3 automakers were a seismic event in the struggle for a just transition. The strike brought thousands of EV and battery jobs under union national agreements with strong job quality protections and billion-dollar investments in the retooling of previously closed facilities. It showed the country that manufacturing electric vehicles and batteries – critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building new climate industries – can and must be built with good union jobs. The UAW wants to bring the expertise in training, workforce development, and good job creation to new green and advanced manufacturing production because it understands the critical importance of a just transition to broader decarbonization efforts.”

In 2023 the UAW and Sparkz announced they had signed a memorandum of understanding establishing a national labor-management agreement and statement of neutrality at the manufacturer’s the manufacturer’s facilities.

Sparkz, founded in 2019, develops and produces zero-cobalt, American-made Lithium-ion batteries. Eliminating cobalt from the battery-making process reduces the cost of producing lithium batteries and also addresses environmental concerns.

UAW Files Federal Labor Charges Against Donald Trump and Elon Musk for Attempting to Intimidate and Threaten Workers

The UAW has filed federal labor charges against disgraced billionaires Donald Trump and Elon Musk for their illegal attempts to threaten and intimidate workers who stand up for themselves by engaging in protected concerted activity, such as strikes. 

After significant technical delays on X, formerly known as Twitter, Trump and Musk had a rambling, disorganized conversation on Monday evening in front of over one million listeners in which they advocated for the illegal firing of striking workers. 

“I mean, I look at what you do,” Trump told Musk. “You walk in, you say, You want to quit? They go on strike, I won’t mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, That’s OK, you’re all gone. You’re all gone. So, every one of you is gone.” 

Under federal law, workers cannot be fired for going on strike, and threatening to do so is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act. 

“When we say Donald Trump is a scab, this is what we mean. When we say Trump stands against everything our union stands for, this is what we mean,” said UAW President Shawn Fain. “Donald Trump will always side against workers standing up for themselves, and he will always side with billionaires like Elon Musk, who is contributing $45 million a month to a Super PAC to get him elected. Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. It’s disgusting, illegal, and totally predictable from these two clowns.”

In New Video, UAW Contrasts Trump’s Failures with Harris’ Results for Lordstown Autoworkers

The UAW has released a new video highlighting the sharp contrast between Donald Trump’s rhetoric and Kamala Harris’ proven track record in delivering for autoworkers, with a focus on Lordstown, Ohio. 

“Donald Trump is all talk and no action when it comes to delivering for autoworkers,” says UAW President Shawn Fain. “Thanks to Vice President Harris and President Biden, Lordstown workers are returning to their hometown. That’s what it means to deliver for American autoworkers.”

While Trump promised to bring jobs back to Ohio, he oversaw the closure of Lordstown Assembly and did nothing to support autoworkers fighting for good jobs before, during, or after his presidency. Kamala Harris not only stood with striking autoworkers in 2019, but helped bring back good union auto jobs to Lordstown at Ultium Cells.
