Region 9 Director Dan Vicente recently addressed delegates at the UAW National Veterans Conference held at the Walter & May Reuther Family Education Center at Black Lake from August 13th through August 18th.
Vincente, himself a veteran of the United States Marine Corps., spoke about the oath each veteran took when they signed up to join the armed forces.
“Many of us have deployed,” Vicente said. “And even if you didn’t deploy, you know what the sacrifices were being in the service. You know the time away from your families. But that’s what you signed up for. We took that oath and signed up for it. We swore to defend the Constitution. All of us did. Part of that to me was swearing to defend the American way of life.”
Vicente also stressed the importance of standing strong during current negations with the Big Three. “I know that fighting seems scary,” he told delegates. “But those of us in this room, we’ve been through worse. Our Brothers and Sisters are going to look to us for guidance and leadership, and I’m proud to say that we are prepared. We have the experience necessary to lead this fight.”
