The UAW welcomed 4,740 employee Academic Researchers into the union earlier this week when project scientists, researchers, specialists and coordinators of public programs at the University of California voted to join the union.
The California Public Relations Board verified that a majority of the Academic Researchers have chosen the UAW as their union. Pending any objections, the Board will certify the results after 15 days.
“We welcome our new UAW members. The work our new UAW members do include groundbreaking research that makes the University of California one of the most respected public research universities in the world,” said Gary Jones, President of the UAW.
UC Academic Researchers will join the 19,000 Academic Student Employees and 7,000 postdoctoral researchers the UAW already represents in the University of California system. New UAW Academic Researchers come from the UC’s San Diego, Irvine, Riverside, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Merced, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Davis campuses.
Once certified, the new UAW bargaining unit will join the UAW’s Region 5 under the leadership of Regional Director Vance Pearson as they bargain their first contract. “We welcome our new members into the UAW family with our rich history in California and Region 5,” said Pearson. “We look forward to bargaining with the University for a world class contract for our world class Academic Research members.”
