Transcript of the remarks: As UAW President, I want to take this time to reflect on Workers’ Memorial Day.
Every day in America, 12 workers die on the job. This year, unfortunately, four of those who died were our UAW brothers and sisters. They came to work like any other day, but a fatal workplace incident occurred. Sadly, they never went home to their families.
Whenever I hear of a UAW member’s death on the job, it hits me personally. There’s nothing more important to me than the health and safety of our members—and of workers everywhere. Workers should always leave the job in the same condition as they arrived. And no family should ever receive a call that their loved one isn’t coming home from work.
That’s why UAW members must remain committed to creating safe workplaces and protecting one another every day. It’s not just a slogan; it’s a personal commitment to be our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers.
On this Workers’ Memorial Day, as we mourn the loss of our four UAW brothers and sisters killed last year and the thousands of others killed on the job every year let’s all remain committed to protecting workers and improving workplace safety each and every day.
