UAW Local 249’s Wheelchair Ramp Crew and the UAW-Ford Department are going strong in their sixth year of helping hundreds of area homebound veterans with their latest ramp building project. The crew also spends time working for Habitat for Humanity and VCP (Veterans Community Project).
For the past several weeks the team has been tackling homelessness among veterans with phase two of the Veterans Village project, creating 12 transitional, tiny homes for vets. The ultra-small homes keep veterans sheltered as they reintegrate into society, with some of the dwellings becoming permanent homes. The ramp crew installs windows, doors, siding and furniture, and does framing, trim work and whatever other construction is needed each day of the building project. Local 249’s ramp crew work is a great example of what giving back to the community means for UAW members.
