This, week, UAW Local 600 member Cindy Garcia was visited by members of Congress and shared her first-hand experience with America’s broken immigration system. Last month, Garcia’s husband Jorge was deported after having lived in the United States for over 30 years.
Garcia and her children spoke with Democratic Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell about the challenges they have faced without their husband and father.
Garcia expressed her hope that Washington will reform the American immigration system to protect children and to keep families together:
“Maybe they can come to some type of understanding to where we need family reunification, we need the dreamers, we need a pathway to citizenship, and we want them to understand that we’re not criminals. We want this to happen. We want our children to succeed in life, that’s why they came here to this country, and a lot of the DACA recipients have done that, and more.”
