DETROIT – The UAW commends the recent courageous decision by the Board of Regents of the University of Michigan to allow in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants and the military and urges other universities to do the same.
UAW President Bob King said, “Young people in this country should have the same right to education, regardless of their immigration status. This country is on the pathway to fair and comprehensive immigration reform and this decision by University of Michigan is a step in the right direction.
“Education is one of the foundations of our country’s economic stability and making tuition affordable for all people living in this country is critical. This legislation will help build Michigan’s economy by enabling those who might not have been able to afford college tuition to attend one of the country’s premier institutions of higher learning. Those college graduates can help move the state forward. We praise the Board of Regents for this progressive decision,” King added.
