DETROIT – The UAW applauds President Obama and Vice President Biden for taking important steps today to strengthen apprenticeship and job training programs. The Obama administration once again demonstrated its commitment to domestic manufacturing and strengthening the middle class.
The UAW has long been a leader in worker education, providing college-credit-granting courses to our members and working with the country’s major employers to design groundbreaking, world class, on-the-job training. We are excited about this opportunity to expand the number of highly-skilled and highly-trained workers and grow the manufacturing workforce in the United States. The U.S. has the most productive workers in the world and is the global leader in manufacturing.
Thriving apprentice programs are important for building on this success. America succeeds when companies and workers work together and we commend all of the companies that partner with the UAW and other unions to train the next generation of workers for the jobs of the future. Tens of thousands of workers have graduated from our apprenticeship programs over the years and we are adding 2,000 new apprentices over the next year. Apprenticeship and worker training programs, established through collective bargaining, give workers the opportunity to acquire skills in the cutting edge manufacturing techniques that produce some of the most sophisticated cars, trucks, and machinery in the world.
The president’s bold action to save the auto industry during the financial crisis allowed our renewed industry to become America’s No. 1 manufacturing export sector. Every day we are making more cars, creating more jobs, and selling more cars here and abroad. Today’s announcement will help ensure we have the workforce to build on this achievement for years to come.
