RE: National Strike – Day 16 Dear Union Brothers and Sisters: Last night, Monday, September 30, 2019, GM passed a comprehensive proposal at 9:40 pm across the bargaining table. This proposal that the Company provided to us on day 15 of the strike did not satisfy your contract demands or needs. There were many areas that came up short like health care, wages, temporary employees, skilled trades and job security to name a few. This back and forth will continue until Negotiations are complete. Under the direction of Director Gerald Kariem of UAW Region 1D, Flint GM workers in the past year have secured 1,000 additional jobs which reflect the hard work of UAW members as they build heavy duty Chevy and GMC pickup trucks.”
While the UAW welcomes the $700 million in Ohio investment outside of Lordstown, Ohio, it is not forgotten that UAW members, their families and citizens in the Mahoning Valley invested in General Motors in its darkest days to allow for the record profits that GM is making in recent years. The people of the Mahoning Valley deserve a solid, secure job investment that no start-up, dependent on federal contracts, can bring to the Valley. UAW members and the community deserve a GM product investment at Lordstown.
In response to General Motors’ announcement today, the UAW’s position is unequivocal: General Motors should assign a product to the Lordstown facility and continue operating it. A federal lawsuit filed by the UAW over the closing of the Lordstown, Baltimore and Warren facilities is still pending, and the UAW will continue its effort to protect the contractual rights of its members at these locations. The parties regularly discuss product placement issues during National Negotiations which will begin in July of this year.
