UAW Files Suit Against GM

The UAW has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court against General Motors for breach of labor contract. The suit requests that the court order GM to transfer seniority union members to the Fort Wayne, Ind., Assembly Plant in keeping with the contractual agreement between the parties. GM is currently circumventing the agreement by using temporary employees. There are approximately 1,000 seniority employees on layoff nationwide, including 690 employees laid off at the Lordstown Ohio Assembly Plant, many of whom have applied to transfer to openings at the Fort Wayne Plant. “UAW members negotiated a binding agreement and we expect ... The following statement relates to the formal objections to GM’s announced future of plants made last week. UAW President Gary Jones: “We have been clear that the UAW will leave no stone unturned and use any and all resources available to us regarding the future of these plants. GM Production Decision Harms Workers in Michigan, Ohio, Maryland

General Motors decision today to stop production at the Lordstown, Ohio, and Hamtramck, Michigan, assembly plants will idle thousands of workers, and will not go unchallenged by the UAW. “General Motors investment in Lansing Grand River is welcome news for UAW members and U.S. consumers where GM makes the majority of their company profits. We hope General Motors continues the policy of “we build, where we sell” as American taxpayers counted on that commitment during GM’s darkest days when they were on the brink of bankruptcy.”

Statement from the UAW on status of Daimler Truck Negotiations

“Some progress was made in the Daimler Truck negotiations, but fell way short of reaching a tentative agreement to present to our members. The parties agreed to extend the Collective Bargaining Agreement on a day by day basis and schedule additional Bargaining Sessions”. Terry Dittes UAW Vice President and Director of the Heavy Truck Department said “We will continue to negotiate with the employer and use whatever means necessary until we achieve terms of a contract that we can be proud of to bring to our membership to ratify”.
