Statement from UAW President Dennis Williams on NAFTA negotiation meetings

This week, as trade negotiators from U.S., Mexico, and Canada meet in our nation’s capital, they must squarely confront the reality that the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has failed working people in all three countries. NAFTA renegotiations will only be successful if it leads to higher wages for workers in all three countries and puts an end to our crippling auto trade deficit with Mexico. To that end, negotiators must comprehensively focus on balanced trade that provides real wage growth for American, Canadian with special emphasis on Mexican workers, whose suppressed wages are harmful for all three countries. ... UAW National CAP: Make two calls today to help save health care!

The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote this week on a bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and end Medicaid as we know it.  This mean-spirited bill, sponsored by Republican Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, would radically change our health care system, leading to unaffordable care for millions of Americans.  This bill would drastically cut coverage for seniors, children, veterans, and people with disabilities. Medicaid, the largest provider of long-term care for seniors in the country, would cease to exist as we know it in only nine years.  If passed, this bill would end federal ... Updated: Statement of UAW President Dennis Williams on Michigan Civil Service Commission Anti-Labor Rule Change Passage

“Today’s decision injects politics into the employment of state workers. If there was any doubt the Civil Service Commission was acting in a partisan way it ended yesterday when Republican State Senators voted on a resolution to prod Commissioners in their actions today. The Commission bowed to political pressure and took the freedom from 35,000 state employees to negotiate together for efficient government with important job protections like overtime pay, seniority, and grievances. These rigged rule changes which will go into effect in 2019, will give the governor more power to dictate working conditions by filling vital positions with unskilled ... Read more

Statement from UAW President Dennis Williams on Passage of S.J. Res. 27

The following is a statement from UAW President Dennis Williams regarding today’s passage of S.J. Res. 27 Disapproving the rule submitted by the Department of Labor relating to “Clarification of Employer’s Continuing Obligation to Make and Maintain an Accurate Record of Each Recordable Injury and Illness.” In a slap to the face of American workers, the Senate vote today to rollback workplace protections that have existed for over forty years. This bill puts workers’ lives and well-being at great risk. It recklessly eliminates common sense, long standing recordkeeping policies that simply required large employers in hazardous industries to keep their health ... Read more

(New York) – UAW Region 9 Director Terry Dittes says Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s new proposal to mandate state entities to buy American-made products is the right move for American workers and will greatly benefit the nation’s economy. During today’s 2017 State of the State address, Gov. Cuomo announced widespread legislative reforms under his “Buy American” plan requiring New York state procurements over $100,000 to give preference to American-made goods and products.
