UAW President Issues Statement about Michigan Legislative Attack on Detroit Teachers

“Once again in the wee hours of the morning Michigan’s Republican legislators attacked teachers rather than address the real issues facing our schools. We are outraged that public officials are putting our children at risk. Teachers who spend the most time developing our children should be treated with dignity and respect. “In essence right-wing legislators are treating Detroit students as test subjects for a laundry list of unproven right-wing causes. If we have learned anything from Flint, it would be that when you treat people as numbers on a spreadsheet bad things happen to those citizens and that right-wing rhetoric ... Read more

Fight for $15 National Day of Action – Nov. 10

Coleman A. Young Building November 10, 2015 4:00 p.m. 2 Woodward Ave. Detroit, MI On November 10, join underpaid working people throughout the country as we stand together for work that pays enough for us to sustain our families. We’ll call on corporate CEOs to raise pay and respect our right to form unions without retaliation. And we’ll call on our elected representatives to stop letting the wealthy and powerful write the rules in their favor. Together, we can work to end racism and oppression, create a path to citizenship for immigrants, and fight for wages that strengthen our communities.

On many nights while watching the local TV news with my father, I’d often hear him say with pride, “I love the UAW because they tell the truth.” In a world where it was (and still is) easy for corporate CEOs to spend millions promoting their skewed versions about what is good for America, it resonated with me even in my youth to see autoworkers be able to tell their side of the story through their collective voice. In grade school, ... Read more
