National Friendship day encourages people from across the globe to connect with friends. This is the day to make a new friend or connect with an old friend. UAW Members Distribute Hundreds of Winter Coats to Those in Need in Michigan and Canada

(WARREN, Mich.) – Just in time for the cold weather descending on Michigan and Ontario, UAW members from locals throughout Region 1 recently distributed hundreds of warm coats to men, women and children in need during the region’s 7th Annual Coat Drive, part of the region’s longstanding tradition of giving back to local communities in parts of Michigan and Canada.  Region 1 is based in Warren, Michigan, and includes locals in Detroit and other parts of Wayne County, as well as Sanilac, Huron, Oakland, St. Clair, Tuscola, Lapeer and Macomb counties. Local 1178 Retiree Devotes Life to Disaster Relief

“I get the blessing” It’s about church in your life and in your heart, says Local 1178 retiree Jody Bratcher. After retiring 10 years ago, the 70-year-old former FCA Chicago Parts Depot worker has devoted her life to what’s in her heart — a desire to serve the Lord by helping victims of natural disasters like hurricanes and floods. Local 2320 Members Donate Their Time and Expertise to Help Families in Need

When help is needed in local neighborhoods or across the country, UAW members don’t hesitate to step up. That couldn’t be more true for legal services workers with the Legal Staff Services Association, represented by UAW Local 2320. More than a dozen members will head to Texas to volunteer their legal knowledge and expertise for some of the most urgent legal cases today. Union front: UAW Member, Family Members Awarded 2016 Union Plus Scholarships

Washington, D.C. – Union Plus recently awarded $150,000 in scholarships to 104 students representing 32 unions, including eight winners representing the United Automobile Workers (UAW). This year’s group of scholarship recipients includes university, college, and trade or technical school students from 32 states. The UAW winners are: Alexandra Arenz of Sheboygan Falls, Wis. Arenz, whose father, Terry Arenz, is a member of UAW Local 833, has been awarded a $500 scholarship. Austin Arenz of Sheboygan Falls, Wis. UAW-Ford Donates $100,000 to Provide Recreational Facility, Mentoring Program for Detroit Youth

New Programs and Renovations unveiled at Chapel Vision Community Development Corporation In honor of National Love Our Children Day, UAW-Ford unveiled its community contributions to Chapel Vision Community Development Center during an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 2. UAW-Ford provided a newly renovated recreational facility, which includes: state-of-the-art simulators for baseball/softball and golf, a half-size basketball court, a fitness area and an arcade. UAW-Ford also announced its Mind & Manners Mentoring and Tutorial Program. GM, UAW commit $3 million to United Way of Genesee County

 Five-year grant to fund health and education programs for Flint children FLINT, Mich. (Feb. 9, 2016) – The United Way of Genesee County today announced a joint effort made by General Motors and the United Auto Workers (UAW) to donate $3 million to support the increased health and education needs for the children of Flint who have been impacted by lead-contaminated water. UAW Region 1A members reach out to homeless, provide new sleeping bags

Detroit – As a day of service on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, UAW Region 1A Director Gamble and members from the region will take it to the streets and to the area’s homeless population. Many homeless Detroiters won’t go to shelters so deliveries will be made directly to the people where they live. The sleeping bags are designed to handle temperatures as low as 17 degrees below zero. UAW members will deliver 300 sleeping bags to several Metropolitan Detroit areas following the kickoff at St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, 4860 15th St. in Detroit. The region is recruiting volunteers ... Serving those who have served: UAW-Ford program teaches veterans how to weld

Some are homeless. Others are missing limbs or facing other serious issues as a result of their service in war-torn places such as Afghanistan and Iraq. But all of the participants in the UAW-Ford Veterans Welding Class have the same desire to improve their lives by learning a trade. Vets participating in the program at the UAW-Ford TTC speak with their instructor.
