CAP delegates discussed the recent merger of UAW regions that brought thousands of additional members into Region 4 and expanded the region’s geographic boundaries.

Region 4 was honored to host an all-states CAP meet and greet March 15-17, 2020 at the Pat Greathouse Education Center (PGC) in Ottawa, Illinois.

Region 4 Director Ronald McInroy chats with CAP delegates at the Pat Greathouse Education Center in March.

The delegates were addressed by Regional Director Ronald McInroy, Assistant Director Brad Dutcher, and our three regional Community Action Program (CAP) legislative coordinators; Kelli Harrison, John Gedney and Daniel Kandlebinder. A prevailing topic was the merger of UAW regions and plans looking to advance the future of our membership.

Shortly after this conference, we were forced to change our plans, much like the rest of the world. We were asked to shelter in place if possible, and social distancing was introduced not only into our vocabularies, but into our lifestyles as well. In addition to large gatherings being restricted, travel was also limited where possible. These necessary measures drastically changed our training calendar. Initially, we canceled a couple of conferences and postponed others before realizing it would be best to cancel all remaining events at the PGC for the 2020 conference season.

However, during this time, our members in many locations were deemed essential and were required to report to work. This presented enormous safety concerns, all while many of our members were navigating the new stressor of having their children out of school. Many families had no access to day care.

In compliance with state mandates and in doing what was best for our membership, UAW facilities in every sector had to adapt to changes regarding safety protocol on practically a daily basis. Some facilities halted their regular production and shifted to manufacturing facemasks and other vital Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Our members and the servicing staff met these challenges without wavering. Ever-changing developments continue to add mounting pressures to day-to-day operations for many of us. We will always strive to ensure the safest possible worksites for the best workforce in the world. Continue to stay as safe as possible. We will provide updates via region4.uaw.org and our UAW Region 4 Facebook page.
