Message to all members re: COVID-19 — All sectors
To my UAW Sisters and Brothers,
I want to send a message to my entire UAW family, all of our active members and our retirees. First of all, I want you to know that during this time of crisis, our UAW leadership is absolutely focused on protecting our membership in every way we can. We are facing the most significant health crisis in memory and I know that our families and members — and all working men and women — are worried, unsure of what tomorrow will bring and facing hardships and extremely difficult challenges and decisions.
I’m not going to pretend that there’s an easy roadmap here. I want you to know that we are working tirelessly to protect our members in every sector of the workplace and society. We have members in plants, in hospitals, in casinos, in schools, in law enforcement and many, many other worksites. Now, a great deal of the media coverage has centered around the Big 3 automotive companies in Detroit, Michigan. And we are certainly in intense talks with these companies, but we are also working with all of our employers and all of our sectors — heavy truck, agricultural implement and defense, casinos, suppliers, etc. — to make sure we do everything we can to safeguard our members and their families. These companies are hearing from us loud and clear.
Our message is simple: You put our members first in this global crisis. These are the very people who make your profits possible, who build your products and who provide your services.
We must all work together in this very difficult time. I will continue to provide updates as we know more. I want to thank you for your patience and your strength as we face this together.
