Detroit – UAW International President Rory L. Gamble has received lifetime achievement awards from the Detroit Chapter NAACP and the Western Wayne County NAACP this month honoring his and UAW’s commitment to the fight for social justice.

Gamble, the UAW’s first African American International President, said he was humbled and honored by the award. “This confirms that the work we do at the UAW in fighting for social justice and the rights and dignity of all Americans is recognized by our community.”

Gamble received the James Weldon Johnson Lifetime Achievement Award at the October 25 Detroit Branch NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner headlined by Vice Presidential Candidate and California Senator Kamala Harris. “The NAACP and the UAW are linked through history and from my earliest days that joint social justice mission has been important to me,” said Gamble. “Both the NAACP and the UAW understand that dignity and respect in life and at the workplace are at the core of who we are as a nation.”

Gamble, who hails from southwest Detroit, began his career in UAW Region 1A where he rose to become Regional Director prior to becoming UAW Vice President and Director of the UAW Ford Department.

He is a life member of the NAACP and has been very active in NAACP activities and initiatives. “It is especially an honor to receive a lifetime achievement award from the Western Wayne County NAACP. Together throughout my career we have worked tirelessly for social justice and community support,” said Gamble. “There is no higher calling than to help your fellow man. I thank the Western Wayne County NAACP for all that we have achieved together.

Gamble is a graduate of the labor studies program at Wayne State University. He lives in Detroit and is the father of five children: Anthony, Rory Jr., Raenard, Rashaun and Rahshidah, and grandfather to 34 grandchildren.
