COMMITTEES
The work of preparing and considering legislation is done largely by committees of both houses of Congress. There are 20 standing committees in the Senate and 22 in the House. In addition, there are special committees in each house and various congressional commissions and joint committees composed of members of both houses. Each house may also appoint special investigating committees. The members of the standing committees in each house are chosen by a vote of the entire body; members of other committees are appointed under provisions of the measures that create them.
