Tell your senators to fund cash-for-clunkers before they leave town
The "cash-for-clunkers" program has already been an enormous success, providing a major boost to auto sales, thereby helping auto dealers, manufacturers, suppliers and their workers — including tens of thousands of UAW members. At the same time, it is helping to reduce oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by replacing older, less efficient vehicles with new, higher mpg vehicles.
The program has been so successful it has already used up most of the $1 billion in funding that was originally appropriated by Congress. Last week the House acted quickly to provide an additional $2 billion in funding to ensure that the program can continue.
This week the Senate is expected to take up the legislation to provide this additional $2 billion in funding for the "cash-for-clunkers" program. It is critically important that the Senate approve this measure before it adjourns at the end of the week. Otherwise, the "cash-for-clunkers" program will run out of funds and have to be suspended.
Please call your senators right away. Urge them to vote for the legislation to provide $2 billion in additional funding for the "cash-for-clunkers" program. Tell them this program is helping consumers, as well as auto dealers, manufacturers, suppliers and their workers, and is also providing a major boost to the overall economy.
