Local 598
This local was born in 1939 in Flint, Michigan to represent workers at one of the Fisher
Body plants where UAW members staged the 1937 Great Sit Down Strike and
the UAW won its first contract with General Motors.
Local 599
The Flint, Mich., local union that represents workers at the
historic "Buick City" complex.
Local 602
Chartered January 18, 1939, this is the local that brought the UAW to
Lansing, Mich. The 3,100 active members build the Pontiac Grand Am,
the Oldsmobile Alero and the Malibu Classic at the General Motors Fisher
Body plant. Local 602 also includes more than 3,00 retiree members.
Local 651
This local, chartered in 1939, represents 4,800 workers at Delphi
Electronics East and Delco Electronics Systems, both in Flint, Michigan.
Local 652
Based in Lansing, Mich., Local 652 represents approximately 6,500 General
Motors employees who proudly build the Pontiac Grand Am, Oldsmobile
Alero, Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Malibu and metal stamping parts.
Local 659
This local represents several GM plants, including: Flint Powertrain V-8 Engine,
Flint Metal Center, Service Parts Operation, Delphi E West Flint, Die Management,
and A.C.C. Transportation.
Local 1292
The 1,600 members of Local 1292 at the Grand Blanc (Mich.) Metal Center make
body stamping, subwelded assembly components and integrated weld tool systems
for General Motors Corp. The local, which was chartered in 1958, also includes
2,500 retirees.
Local 1981 - Southeast
Michigan Chapter of the National Writers Union
The National Writers Union (NWU) is the trade union for freelance
writers of all genres who work for American publishers or employers.
They are committed to improving the economic and working conditions
of freelance writers through the collective strength of their 6,500
members in 17 local chapters throughout the country. The Southeast Michigan
chapter has about 140 members located around the state.
Local 4911
Formed in 2001, Local 4911 represents 2,300 workers at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Mich. The local includes technicians (such as x-ray, respiratory), service personnel (such as housekeepers and kitchen staff), LPNs and skilled maintenance workers.

Duane Zuckschwerdt was elected director of UAW Region 1C on June 14, 2006, at the union’s 34th Constitutional Convention in Las Vegas. Region 1C covers 11 counties in south-central Michigan, including the cities of Flint, Lansing and Jackson.
Zuckschwerdt served as assistant director of Region 1C from June 2002 until his election as regional director.
As assistant regional director, Zuckschwerdt negotiated contracts, handled arbitration cases and assisted with organizing campaigns in the region.
Zuckschwerdt was appointed to the staff of the UAW in August 1998 and assigned to Region 1C where he serviced UAW local unions throughout the region. He served as Region 1C education director from February 2002 until he was named assistant regional director by then-Region 1C Director Bob Roth.
A UAW member since 1964, Zuckschwerdt joined UAW Local 652 when he started work at GM’s plant in Lansing, Mich. In January 1965, he took an educational leave to attend Flint Junior College (now Mott Community College). In June 1965, he began work at the Chevrolet Manufacturing plant in Flint. Mich., where he joined UAW Local 659 and completed his skilled trades apprenticeship program, earning a journeyman’s card in machine repair.
Zuckschwerdt’s union activism and leadership skills led to Local 659 members electing him to positions of increasing responsibility, starting with his election as an alternate committeeman in 1969. He subsequently was elected committeeman, first vice president and, in June 1996, president of the local union. He also served as chair of the skilled trades’ subcommittee, joint council delegate, benefits plan representative and a member of various plant-wide committees.
While president of UAW Local 659, Zuckschwerdt served as chair of the UAW’s Greater Flint Area Presidents Council and as president of the Flint Area Community Action Program (CAP), the union’s political action arm.
He is a recipient of the Walter Reuther Award for distinguished UAW service, the highest award a UAW staff person or member can receive.
Zuckschwerdt was born on May 30, 1946, in Owosso, Mich. Duane and his wife, Connie, reside in Corunna, Mich. They have two sons, Eric and Scott, and four grandchildren – Jacob, Joshua, Lauren and Xavier.
